Very nice unit. Highly recommended. Worth the money. Reliable.
5 Stars
Very nice unit. Highly recommended. Worth the money. Reliable.
Long overdue update:I've had my unit for just over 5 years now (bought in November 2013), and am still very pleased with my purchase. I still give it 5 stars.Perhaps some would take a star off for not having convenient, inexpensive Internet connectivity, but 95% of my needs are satisfied without that connectivity. My son was interested in getting a nice weather station and "hemmed and hawed" about Internet connectivity, which some others do a fine job of. I suggested to him that he might regret going with the others because of reliability and breakage. He decided to agree with me, and now has one of these too (hundreds of miles away). It's now 1 year old. He loves it.My unit has been rock-steady reliable over 5 full years. No physical failures at all. It looks just fine, no degradation of plastic parts is visible. Anemometer, wind vane and rain sensors seem perfect.I moved the unit from the corner of my deck to a pole mount farther away in the back yard because of some deck changes. It's now on a heavy galvanized steel pole. The only thing I have had to do with it is replace the lithium backup battery (after about 3 years?). My unit gets plenty of sun, so I think that all owners should resolve themselves to periodic replacement of the battery. That may influence your decision on where to mount the unit. If the backup battery decides to go out in winter in Duluth, a roof-mounted location might be quite "suboptimal" for you - or resign yourself to preventative battery replacement in the fall. When I changed the battery, I took the opportunity to clean out the rain sensor assembly, but it was not clogged in the least. YMMV, of course.I decided to plug the console into continuous power and leave the backlight on all the time. This seemed to increase the indoor sensor temperature by about 1°F, so I changed the calibration on that sensor to match the real temperature. I do wish that the unit had a choice of background colors; alas, amber is what you get. But its non-adjustable brightness is just fine for both daytime and nighttime use.A neighbor of mine bough a console and is using my sensor signal for his own use (I'm happy to do so ;-)), and another neighbor is considering doing that, too. These units support 8 channels, and a console can relay on a different channel to other consoles (e.g., to extend the range if necessary). The console has diagnostics for signal strength and packet loss. With an advertised 1000ft in clear air and 300 ft through a wall (I tested mine in a neighbor's house 350 ft away and it worked fine), and relay capability, the reception capabilities seem first class. The "Weather Center" feature lets you cycle through various measures for the chosen parameter of interest. So when there's a rain storm, I have the unit displaying "rain". I set the graph to show the last 24 hours of rain data, and choose the weather center option for what makes sense for the situation - e.g.,* rain amount in the the last 15 minutes* rain amount today* rain amount for the last 24 hours* rain amount for the last storm* rain amount for the last week* max rain rate (and time)I'll sometimes cycle through them for a good overview, but leave it on one that best matches the situation. For a big storm, the max rain rate is most useful, but for a light rain, the rain amount for the last 15 min or 24 hours is most useful.Same basic story for each and every measured parameter. It takes a while to get used to the control details, but it's quite flexible and very well thought out.I'm an engineer, and this seems to be designed for people like me in mind.Original review:------------------------------I'm quite satisfied with this weather station. I've had it for about 3 weeks now.I've had cheaper units over the years, and they all seem to have some major compromise or other - they chew up batteries (I had an anemometer that went through batteries in less than a month), have sensor/display pairing limitations, are a pain to figure if they're communicating correctly (and have significant range limitations), look cheap, are cheap (cheap plastic that discolors and degrades quickly with sunlight's UV), and break, break, break. Replacement parts? Dicey. I have a stable of several dead or semi-functional weather station "systems" (well, only about 4 of them).I don't have a long history on this unit, but it looks to be of much better design, materials and construction. Parts are replaceable.I mounted the sensor on the corner post of my deck - on a piece of 1-1/4 PVC pipe. I drilled out a 1-1/4 hole in the deck post and post cap, sanded down the business end of the pipe a bit with a belt sander because the fit was way too tight, lubed up and softened the pipe with PVC glue, and used a 5 pound sledge to drive the pipe into the hole in the deck post. Caulked around the hole. Glued a pipe coupling at the top of the pipe, and then mounted the unit with the supplied "U-bolt". Very solid.*** Great features:* Extremely configurable* Everything can be calibrated.* Great wireless range - and it's real. I tested it inside a neighbor's house at least 200 feet away and it worked perfectly.* Quick updating on wind speed and direction (2.5 sec) so it's quick and easy to verify wireless reception.* 8 wireless channels to choose from - and the console can act as a wireless repeater using those other channels.* You can easily share your sensor with neighbors. You can use more than one console.* Sensor suite is a single unit. No wires at all.* Sensor suite is totally solar-powered - with super capacitor (for nighttime) and lithium backup battery.* Lots of diagnostic features (e.g., data on packet loss, signal strength, etc.).* It has many useful, custom-settable alarms.* The display has a power adaptor, so you can leave the backlight on all the time. The backlighting is very even. The display is very clear and contrasty from a wide range of viewing angles.* The display has a status area that's very useful. The other evening when it was raining about 0.4"/min, the display alternated the rain rate data with "IT'S RAINING CATS N DOGS". The developers seem to have a sense of humor.* The advertisements are not quite clear on the graph display. Simply, it looks like it shows you the data for the last 25 hours, or 25 days, or 25 months, (25 years?) for just about every parameter that it measures.* Can interface with a computer - but it's expensive.* Lots more - it's a real instrument, not a toy.* Notice the black parts? I suspect that's to keep them dry (from snow/ice in winter) via solar heating. If so, nice touch.* While the unit is expensive, it looks like you can actually buy replacement parts (e.g., anemometer cups), as nothing outside lasts forever.*** Cons:* The setup instructions gave me the impression that it would come up all by itself. It doesn't. After you see the "received data" confirmation, you need to cycle through the setup (time, etc.) before the data displays. I waited and waited. I thought I had a defective unit. Then I read more carefully, ran through the simple setup, and everything worked perfectly.* The unit is so full-featured that the interface is a bit complex. But basic usage is quite simple.* The display lighting is amber - not exactly the best color.* The display has a kind of outdated style.* The chart, while useful, does not tell you what range the data falls in - it appears to have a dynamic range.
