I've not owned a business-grade Cisco product before (despite their great reputation). After reading many positive reviews of this switch, I purchased the unit from Amazon. Setup was straightforward. I mounted the Cisco in my rack, moved the network cables from the Dell, and powered-up. The web-based setup is excellent and allowed me to configure a 4-port LACP LAG without any trouble. That is the last time I've had to interact with the setup interface for the switch. I'm seeing outstanding speeds that maximize the capabilities of the Synology 1813+ NAS unit and the other gigabit devices in my home. I'm very satisfied with the quality and speed of this unit and will certainly buy an additional unit if I need more ports over time.
At the time of my Cisco switch purchase, Synology did not list it among the switches that are "compatible" with their NAS units. I can confirm what other users have also noted, this particular switch works well with a Synology 1813+ in a 4-port LAG setup via LACP. I highly recommend this switch for its powerful, web-based interface and rock-solid network speeds. It is an excellent balance of quality, features, and price.
This switch is fast. I have tons of data going through it due to the high-quality video for 5 rooms and it hasn't had a problem. The web interface is great and the quality is unmatched. It worked right out of the box, too, without needing the web UI. However, you'll want to get in there to change passwords. I cannot complain, it's the best switch I've ever owned, hands down.
Overkill? Maybe, maybe not...
Other network hardware: Cisco EA6500 (Wireless a/b/g/n/ac, 4 - Gb ports), D-Link switch (8 - Gb ports)
Devices on the Network: iPod touch, 2 iPhones, Axis IP Camera, Samsung LCD TV, Xbox 360, PS3, 2 Laptops, 2 Desktops, NAS.
One of the Desktop computers has 2 - Gb ports "teamed" together (Link Aggregation) and so does the NAS; think 2 Gb/s theoretical throughput.
This switch does everything I need it to do (and things I don't ;-) for a reasonable price. Cisco quality at this level is pretty good as well.
Hmmmm....I learned the hard way that this isn't quite as true as I'd like.
In my search for a low cost switch with 802.3ad link aggregation, I began buying cheap, thinking that whatever I buy will work. There were some good and some not so good reviews of my first purchases, and when I purchased them, perhaps I got lemons, but either way, the end result was I threw away good money and wasted a lot of hours trying to get previously purchased competitor smart switches to work right.
In comes Cisco SG200-26 to the rescue.
This switch is made to spec. It does everything it says it will do with aplomb, never fails, and is just...well...rock solid.
Bonding 2 ports together for link aggregation is a relatively easy process, SNMP works well, and there are basic analysis and troubleshooting tools that all work to spec and work as the manual states.
I often make fun of Cisco, but in the networking space, I guess Cisco is much like a reliable volkswagon. It just works, and works well.
Now, having played around with a Juniper fanless switch, it's clear that if you have the money, the prices, reliability, and feature sets of switches get very expensive very quickly. So imagine my surprise that a switch this solid sells for such a low price.
There is a PoE version as well, and you have individual port control on that model of which ports get power and which ports don't, to save energy. But since I only have one PoE based IP phone, a single port injector is just about all I needed, allowing me to purchase this lower cost version. There are also models that offer more ports, but in an SMB environment like mine, with much of the infrastructure on wireless, and also using PLC to extend out with smaller Gbit switches that are essentially featureless, the 24 port version is all that's necessary.
You also get port security and port mirroring. Both great features if you want packet mirroring to log information and include something like a Palo Alto networks AFW in monitoring mode.
The web gui is a little dated looking, but functional, and it's almost comforting that this GUI is so basic.
As products go, this one is a draft endurance work horse. And if you've read any of my other reviews, as long as I get the minimum features I want, there is nothing more important to me than something that is cost effective, reliable, durable, and lasts long. With that in mind, you really couldn't do much better in a managed switch than this one.
Highly recommended.
