Extremely funny and as the Brits would say, "Spot on!" The dry wit of the British original is something to see and will have you laughing constantly. A bot more sharp and cutting than the American version, the documentary style filming is more realistic and the characters are larger and better acted. There are only six episodes in the first series, but each is fantastic. The length is just under three hours and it is a great way to spend any boring afternoon and it is funny no matter how many times you've seen it. I think the American copy is also hilarious, but you lose something in the copy. Where the first season of the American version needed to work out the kinks, this is a hit throughout! Get it and have your friends over for some warm beer and hearty laughs!
This is the only television show besides Seinfeld that I can watch over and over again. The characters in this series are much more believable than the U.S. version. I think everyone has encountered people like the office workers in this show at one time or another in their own work places. These six episodes feature some of the best comedy writing and acting in television history. Many TV shows require a great many episodes to connect with an audience but The Office sucks you in within the first five minutes.
British comedies get away with more and are more realistic. It doesn't get any better than this with Ricky gervais as David Brent as the self absorbed (in denial) office boss. This first series started a cult following here and in Great Britain and the boards were burning as the Brits gor the second series sooner and the excitement forced US producers to come up with a version suitable for the US. David, Tim, Gareth and the gang will have you laughing so hard you will have to watch it 3 times to get all the inuendos.
Though I like the American version of The Office better, and this is me being prejudice because I watched the American version first, this UK version is still pretty darn good. It can be a little slow to watch, what with it being British humor, but I can see the many similarities between this version and the American version, so my interest is usually engaged to see what happens next. At the value for what dvds are going for these days, the price for a "fiver" as the Brits say can't be beat.
