These series of switches have an operational power consumption of only 22 watts, so you know these Cisco Systems won't draw much power.The Cisco Catalyst WS-C2960G-8tC-L model is a powerful standalone switch that provides desktop connectivity. Add routers to your LAN configuration along with other accessories, and this networking hub or switch will layer the protocol without any delays down the line. Take one look at the 8 switches that you can plug into along the front panel of the Catalyst switch. These ports support several different cabling types, such as Ethernet 10Base-T, 1000Base-T, and Ethernet 100Base-TX. With a MAC address size of 8,000 entries, configuring the Cisco Catalyst switch will be a fast process.These advanced series of Cisco switches provide sophisticated access control lists and superior security to the edge of the networking setup. This type of gigabit Ethernet switch has an SSL encryption algorithm that prevents anyone from accessing restricted files. These security measures, however, don't take away from the easy manageability of the 2960G-8TC module because the ports can be remotely accessed. Use HTTP, SNMP, Telnet, TFTP, SSH, RMON, or HTTPS protocols to alter any router or power uplink attached to the switch.In fact, dual-purpose uplinks provide flexibility, allowing for the use of either copper or fiber uplinks in your Catalyst series installation grid. Security is further enhanced because this WS-C2960G-8TC-L series of switches is entirely hard-wired to your system. It's not possible to connect through a wireless pathway and compromise data.Auto-configuration of specialized applications is also extremely easy using Cisco Smartports. Log into your corporate account, and you can access the 2960G-8TC-L with any PC computer in a branch office. You'll appreciate the speed with which the software and hardware operate because the system configuration takes mere moments with Cisco Network Assistant software.Whether your networks are full of multiple Catalyst switches or an extra power supply, don't worry about any heat issues because this product comes with a maximum operating temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. There are no fans necessary in these compact Catalyst series switches either so noise levels are always kept to a minimum.

Good value for a solid switch
The 2960 is an extremely popular switch for a reason. Great feature set, no fan, very solid. At this price the value is tremendous. These are an industrial strength product with all of the goodness of their big brothers in a small form factor. This model can even do basic layer 3 routing. Mine shipped with no application code loaded - so be sure to have a console cable and know how to find a good firmware on Cisco’s web site (not as easy as it sounds), and how to load it over xmodem. The IOS12.2 version is probably the one you want. The 15 version was flakey for me on this model.

Nice and QUIET
One of the best things about 2960G-8TC-L is that it's fanless. It's the only enterprise class access switch Cisco makes that is. LIke a lot of network admins we prefer to run the same type or brand of equipment at home that we do at work, but, unless we have a nice insulated data closet or IDF at the house, the fan noise from even one switch or router is enough to put the kibosh on the whole idea. This little gem is perfect. It appears to work quite well as an air-cooled unit. Just don't crowd it and leave a couple of inches free space around it for airflow. It won't run advanced IP services, but it is compatible with release 15.0.2-SE9 IP BASE, which is the most recent as of this writing. I replaced one of my noisy old WS-C2950-12's with this one and I'm *very* happy with the result. In fact, I'm going to add another one to my network.Read full review
